Whats Wrong With Plastic?

A few years ago the use of BPA in plastic baby bottles was banned by the FDA.  BPA is synthetic compound used in many plastics.  It is also a hormone disruptor.  Hormone disruptions can cause things such as cancerous tumors, birth defects, and other developmental disorders.
“A poison kills you, A chemical like BPA reprograms your cells and ends up causing a disease in your grandchild that kills him.” biology professor Frederick vom Saal
The solution by manufacturers was to reformulate what baby bottles are made of.  Recent studies tell us that the replacement for BPA might be even MORE toxic.  BPS a widespread replacement for BPA is also an endocrine disruptor.  BPS is more easily absorbed through the skin and only slightly less toxic than BPA.   Why you should Ditch Plastic Baby Bottles

The Real Problem

The root cause of this issue is the deeply flawed and outdated 1976 Toxic Substances Control Act.  Under the TSC chemicals are safe until proven otherwise.  That’s why more than 80,000 chemicals are approved for use (such as BPA and BPS) but have never been tested for safety to our health. Public pressure was enough to make a major dent in the use of BPA.  Unfortunately that was just a band-aid to a larger problem. Tell the EPA: Protect us from dangerous plastics chemicals like BPA and its replacements

My Story

Before I even knew how dangerous BPA was I knew that I wanted to avoid plastic baby bottles, however bottle shopping can be very overwhelming for new parents.  At the store there are literally 10 different bottle brands to choose from and they are all slightly different. On top of that I was paranoid about nipple confusion and I did not want to take the chance of not being able to breastfeed.  We ended up going with the Tommy Tippy brand because I felt nipple confusion was less likely with the shape of the nipple.  The problem was they were made with plastic.  As soon as I went back to work I switched to Evenflo glass bottles. I was lucky enough to find them at target. Unfortunately they don’t carry them anymore, but you can find them on Amazon. Afraid they will break? We went through 3 kids with our glass bottles and two broke, but neither was anywhere near the baby.  They were dropped and instead of hitting the floor, they hit something else at an odd angle.

Take Away

Avoid plastic baby bottles.   It’s an easy switch with huge gain.  Babies grow and develop at a rapid pace which makes them more susceptible to toxins than adults.  Even if there are no noticeable short term effects, its the long term effects that we should be worried about.  It’s better to be safe and go with glass bottles.
